THE YORKSHIRE DALES, AUGUST 2008

During 10th-15th August 2008 Getting Out enjoyed a first ever walking holiday in The Yorkshire Dales, based at The New Inn, Clapham, North Yorkshire. Although the weather was not always dry, the wetter spells served their purpose in re-charging the numerous falls and forces which makes this region such a paradise for walkers. The most significant challenge was ascending Gordale Scar via the waterfall which owing to previous heavy rain was all but engulfed by the rapidly descending flow from Gordale Beck. Eight brave souls conquered the invigorating scramble to the top of the Scar, whilst the remainder took a grassy slope by the side of the Scar. The Cave Tour at White Scar did go ahead but was in some doubt right up to the beginning because of rising ground water after heavy rain. However we did have to make a somewhat premature exit to ensure a safe retreat but not before a fascinating study and narrated talk of a most remarkable limestone geology. The Ingleton Waterfall walk was nothing less than spectacular thanks again to heavy rain. The two previous assessment visits in November and July were impressive but our visit in August surpassed anything seen before. It seemed the ground was almost quaking as a result of the immense pressure of water tumbling through narrow, rocky courses down to the small village of Ingleton. A stunningly picturesque journey by train on the famous Settle to Carlisle line not only provided a day off from walking but an opportunity to shop and tour in England's border city with Scotland. The final walk around on the Scar at Giggleswick (close by the market town of Settle) took in a delightful trail to include limestone escarpments and outcrops and a finale by the River Ribble between Stainforth and Settle. A perfect conclusion to a most enjoyable walking experience. The remainder of the afternoon was available for everyone to do as they pleased. There are plans to return to The New Inn for another Yorkshire Dales walking holiday from 9th-14th August 2009. Details for this holiday will be released during the course of the autumn and the package should include some new walks. Meanwhile, I would like to thank everyone who took part this year for helping to make the holiday a success for all and thanks too for your emails, cards and kind words of encouragement. A final word, to compliment our accommodation hosts at The New Inn, Clapham - Martin, Renee and their hard-working staff for providing an excellent choice of food, drink and very comfortable accommodation.

Alan, your GO Walking Host, 1st September 2008
